Competitor Skin Preparation

We use an in-house tanning solution to achieve the darkness tan needed by competitors. This is not your run of the mill solution. It is a formula that took a year to develop and is not sold over-the-counter. For most competitors, 2-3 coats is all you need. Very light competitors may need an extra coat. The first coat is a lighter coat and develops overnight into a dark base color. The second coat (the most important coat) is applied the night before the show. It is VERY DARK, dry's fast, not muddy and you wont turn green. You may feel sticky for about 1 hour. Just follow the skin prep instructions. This coat also develops overnight into a dark base color.

Again, please follow the tanning skin prep instructions for maximum color benefit and begin no later than 5 days out from your event.

The Worst Products For Your Spray Tan:
Dove: Dove is the absolute worst soap you can use for your spray tan! We consider dove the villain of the spray tan industry. Not only will it cause streaking and fading, but it’ll turn you orange! Dove changes the pH level of your skin and throws off the whole spray tanning process! It’ll ruin your whole week!

Irish Spring: Not only will this dry out your skin, but it’ll even cause or worsen acne, irritate sensitive skin and it contains mineral oils which will pull your spray tan right off!

Oil of Olay: This soap can not only sensitize your skin to allergies, but it can cause serious skin irritation. Oil of Olay is a big no no for your spray tan.

Aveeno: This product contains alcohol which will dry out your skin and fade your spray tan dramatically.

More on the bronze:
Getting a base tan is recommended however not close to the day of your event. Tanning beds can cause you to retain water between the skin and muscle as well as cause peeling. If you choose to do so, tan naked and DO NOT BURN. Tan lines can not be covered and if you will start to peel and I will not be able to fix that part.

Our solution and application technique will get you stage ready.

For maximum results....

Spend the week or two prior to your competition spray appointment exfoliating and moisturizing your body. Pro Tans 'Get Buffed' is a good exfoliant and Hemp is a good moisturizer. I have both products in stock.

Waxing should be done at least 72 hours prior to your tan. If you are new at waxing allow 7-10 days before your tan.

Day Before Tan
Shave – 24 hours before tan. This allows skin to repair before tanning session.
Exfoliate. VERY IMPORTANT. This removes dead skin cells and helps PH Balance your skin. I recommend using exfoliating gloves rather than a washcloth or loofa. Refrain from scrubs that contain oils unless it’s more than 1 day before tanning session. Oils can leave a film and block the spray tan absorption. Skin should not have remnants from old spray tan. I recommend ‘Get Buffed’ – I have it in stock for $13
Wash – No bar soaps(ever). I recommend Schmidts All Natural Body Wash for $8 or less expensive brands like White Rain or Suave Essentials Body Wash for $3 – I have both in stock.

The DAY OF your spray tan, DO NOT Moisturize , use deodorant or EXFOLIATE.It is suggested that you have shaved at least 24 hours before your spray tan, preferably the night before. Do not shave with a straight razor. All waxing completed at least 72 hours prior if you're accustomed to waxing. Otherwise, wax 7 - 10 days before your spray tan appointment. You cannot shave or shower after your color is applied until after your competition. DO NOT put on any make-up, deodorant, perfume/cologne before or after your spray tan application. These products will raise the skin's ph and turn your armpits and body green!

The number of applications you need depends on how dark your natural skin tone is, how dark you want to be, how well your skin absorbs the color, and whether or not you are already a little tan. Competitors with light to medium skin tone need 4 applications. Competitors with a dark skin tone need at least 2 applications. Unless you are naturally dark, we recommend 2 visits (4 coats) for all competitors. Since all events are at different times please remember it is always recommended to try to get at least 2 coats of tan in so please make appointments well in advance. Starting 2 days before your show is ideal. The following is a sample schedule for a Saturday show (of course we can work around your schedule). The RECOMMENDED schedule assumes the competitor will need 2 visits (4 coats):

  • Thursday - Technician will apply tanning solution to clean hair free dry skin. Allow to completely dry (15-20 minutes). A fan will be used to speed up the process. Once dry, a second application will be applied and you will dry in front of a fan for 15-20 minutes. When dry, you may put on loose fitting clothing and go home and go to bed. Wear gloves and place covers over your sheets as the bronzer will partly rub off; sleeping in a sleeping bag is also affective. The tanning solution will go to work overnight, darkening your skin considerably.

  • Friday - Shower lightly. No soap, conditioners or oils or shaving. In other words, Rinse Only using luke warm water until water runs clear. Make sure to rinse your back and legs until water runs clear.. Pat dry. Technician will apply 3rd and 4th coats. These coats are the most important and will be much darker than the coats applied on Thursday. Allow to completely dry (15-20 minutes between coats). A fan will be used to speed up the process. Once dry you may put on loose fitting clothing and go home and go to bed. Wear gloves and place covers over your sheets as the bronzer will partly rub off; sleeping in a sleeping bag is also affective. Do not shower or shave until after the show. Dont get wet and Dont sweat. You are now ready for the show. NOTE: Optional top coat kit can be purchased consisting of fresh solution, puff and gloves.

  • Saturday - DAY OF SHOW - If you feel you need to be a little darker or you need a little touch-up you can use the top coat kit (Purchased seperately). Simply shake the bottle and squirt the solution onto the puff. Use the puff to apply to your skin. Apply evenly to avoid streaks. Ask a friend to apply solution to your back. This will get you extremely dark. This will wash off when you take a shower leaving a nice tan.

We recommend applying no more than two to three coats without rinsing. Rinsing removes the outer layer of product which allows the subsequent applications to absorb into your skin properly. When applied as directed the tanning solution will give you the deepest darkest tan available and will not rub off!

*Avoid all loofa/loofa gloves, pads and sponges. DON'T USE THESE SOAPS AFTER YOUR SPRAY TAN...DOVE, IRISH SPRING, ANTIBACTERIAL DIAL, OR ZEST. THESE SOAPS WILL STRIP THE TAN OFF.

  • For men and women both, painting the finger and toenails with a clear polish will avoids tainting of the nails. We will provide barrier cream for this purpose as well, which is easily wiped off after your tan application.

  • What to Wear and Bring To Your Spray Tan Session

  • Come to us with clean, dry skin wearing dark, loose fitting clothing and flip flops. Do not wear any RED to your spay tan appointment but red comp suits are okay. The RED dye in cotton will tend to turn your skin GREEN!

  • An oversized, long sleeve t-shirt and oversized drawstring (non elastic) waistband style sweatpants made of silky fabrics are best because they glide over your skin and won't disrupt the development of the color. DO NOT wear a pullover shirt it will hurt a drying tan. These clothes will also protect your tan from seat belt marks when you drive home. No blue jeans, sock or tennis shoes.Wear flip-flops Do NOT wear your competition suit for the spray session

  • DO NOT SHOWER or put on any deodorant, perfume/cologne until AFTER your competition.

  • Additional Information
The actual spray tanning session takes about 10 minutes for the application and another 15-30 minutes to complete the drying process. You will feel slightly sticky for about an hour until completely dry. After your color has been applied, please plan to sleep in your loose, oversized clothing until the morning. This will eliminate any hand marks on your body during sleep.

Competitors assume ALL risk to any hotel property damage, not limited to soiling of linens. It is strongly suggested you bring an extra set of sheets, pillow cases, blanket and towels. Colored ones are best. Remove the hotel linens prior to your appointment so the linens won't inadvertently get soiled. Discuss the use of ANY other tanning products used BEFORE your appointment with us. We are NOT responsible for poor results with mixing of products that we are unaware of.

IMPORTANT: Once daily exfoliate skin in shower. GET BUFFED is recommended as it is formulated with natural exfoliators, plant extracts and vitamins that are exclusively designed to maximize and enhance your sunless tanning results while helping to balance out your skin’s pH level. Pay special attention to chest, elbows, knees, ankles, and any rough/dry areas. Don’t forget to scrub your back, neck and under your arms. Pat dry . This exfoliation process will remove dry skin, oil and dirt from the top layer of your skin providing the best skin condition for spray tan absorption.

Best methods to remove your spray tan AFTER the show ONLY.
GET BUFFED is highly recommended. It is formulated with natural exfoliators, plant extracts and vitamins that are exclusively designed to maximize and enhance your sunless tanning results while helping to balance out your skin’s pH level. If you did not purchase it before your tan, I suggest purchasing it during one of your tanning sessions.

Rub your skin with baby oil and leave for 10 minutes before jumping into the bath. Using Head & Shoulders original Shampoo & an Exfoliating Glove, scrub your skin and watch the Tan glide off. Rough towel dry and then moisturise

Making up a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda will also strip a tan off in minutes. Relax in a hot bath, and then exfoliate with the mixture. For stubborn areas, leave it on for a few minutes before exfoliating.

If none of these methods work, it means that the spray tan just cannot be removed. Let time take its course, soak in the tub every day, and keep your skin moisturized. Choose only one product, and stick to it. Do not use multiple products to get rid of sunless tanner from your skin, or you will just irritate your skin and possibly cause it to dry out.
